guitar lessons and classes near me for kids and adults in pittsburgh pa

Overview

Our guitar instructors teach anything from rock, pop, blues, metal, country and classical styles on both electric and acoustic guitars. Beginners work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading and theory. Each lesson will challenge you with a new technique or music theory, and ends with something fun – such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar method books and teaching styles based on student needs, preferences, and interest. We also encourage students to bring smartphones or CDs to their lessons to learn their favorite tunes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the #1 reason to study guitar at M&M Music?

Our guitar instructors are warm and friendly, and get to know each student and parent on a personal level. We work with you to craft a lesson plan that fits your individual needs and the student's favorite type of music. Whether you're playing in local bands, a seven year old taking their first lesson, or a fifty year old returning to the guitar after many years, we’ll set goals to achieve your musical aspirations.

What types of music can I play on the guitar?

Guitar is a very versatile instrument and is commonly used in music like pop, rock, jazz, country, metal, blues, folk, R&B and even Latin.

Should my child play the electric or acoustic guitar? What is the difference and do you need to learn one instrument before the other?

Both electric and acoustic guitar are played the same exact way. The only difference is what styles of music they are best at playing and how the instruments feel when played. The acoustic guitar is a great instrument choice if you want to be able to sit around a campfire and play some of your favorite songs with family or friends singing along. Acoustic guitar uses no amplification so the instrument needs to be bigger and use thicker tougher strings in order to be heard (might be more challenging for younger hands). It's best suited for styles like country, folk, and soft rock. The electric guitar is a very versatile instrument that uses amplification to get its sound. Although it requires a guitar amp to make a loud enough sound, the sound can be adjusted to work for many different types of music from clean pop and jazz music all the way to loud crunchy metal music (guitar amps usually come with headphone jacks for quiet playing).

What if I want to learn the bass guitar or ukulele?

Our instructors at M&M music also offer lessons in both of these instruments.

Do I need to own an instrument to take lessons?

It is recommended to have an instrument of your own in order to get the most out of lessons. If you need help or advice on finding an instrument that will suit your needs, wants, and budget, ask your teacher at M&M music before making a purchase.

How long does it take to learn how to play guitar?

Luckily, the guitar has a great learning curve for beginners. Within the first couple of lessons you will be able to play some of your favorite songs at a basic level. Although it is an easy instrument to jump into, guitar players can spend years trying to perfect their craft and finding their sound. There is always room to grow and learn new things about the instrument.

I don't have any musical background or ability. Can I still help my child practice?

Yes. Even if you don't have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress. Parents will occasionally sit in on their child's music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound or how the student should be positioning their hands.
